Smokin' and Steamin'

All right folks, some news from New Jersa again!!
I can't believe how great it is at Mason Gross. The school has not a big name, neither does Rutgers. However, the teachers and students are great! Yesterday (tuesday) I had sort of my first real lessons.
I'm in a class with all graduate students called 'advanced improvisation'. this class is taught by Stanley Cowell, great jazz piano player.
After that I had my first combo lessen, great fellow students first of all, and the combo is led by Vic Juris, great guitar player, plays with David Liebman.
Last but not least, the big band. There's two big bands at Mason Gross, one mostly undergraduate and one mostly graduate, in which I am of course.
We have a 4-5-5-5 setup, which means 5 trombones. After the 'handing out' of the music , the guys just nailed it down. Everybody is just right on it. Our first trombone player, Pete (I was playing 2nd) now and then jokes around and plays stuff an octave up, ridiculous high and just killing..
The big band is led by Ralph Bowen, great saxophonist.
BTW, next year gig in the Blue Note! how cool is that?
So, enough talking. Besides I have a little registration and tuition payment problems I'm doing fine. Just try to stay cool!
Next wednesday I'm going to audition for the 'Jazz Classic Band', part of the New York Youth Symphony. There's only youngsters from 13 to 22, so if I'm in i'll be the oldest I guess. Doesn't matter; this band plays in the Lincoln Center, the trombone coach is Steve Davis and special guest soloists are Warren Vache and Steve Turre.....
I'll do my best for that, sgonna be hard...

Een vriend van mij is ook net begonnen op dezelfde school, hij heet Pete (Laurance) en studeert saxofoon bij Ralph Bowen. Verder zwart haar en een nogal dominante persoon hehe. Doe hem de groeten van me!

hey man, goeie verhalen. Leuk te lezen dat je op je plek zit. In de categorie "dat vind ik vast interessanter dan jij": volgens mij is streetlight manifesto begonnen in/bij Rutgers. De zanger/gitarist/liedjesschrijver deed daar geloof ik iets van fotografie ofzo. is de amerikaanse koffie echt zo beroerd als men zegt?
